The Dominique Portet label features an emblem with special meaning for the Portet family.
The emblem takes the form of an arabesque, a sinuous unbroken line that is characteristic of Moorish decoration. It symbolizes the links and close bonds between generations, families and continents, within the context of an artistic drive and expression.
The form comes from jewellery made by the famous Greek jeweller Ilias Lalaounis, the only jeweller to be welcomed as an associate of the Academie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in Paris. He has given his permission for the form he created to be reproduced on the Dominique Portet label.
Ilias Lalaounis has boutiques in Athens, Paris, London, Geneva, Zurich, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. His work has been exhibited in New York, Washington DC, Paris, and at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum in Athens, situated on the site of his father’s atelier, is his legacy to his home country.
Dominique’s wife Julia met the Lalaounis family when she was a student. It was the start of a friendship that has grown over decades, and has extended to new family members. Ilias Lalaounis gave his permission for Dominique Portet to use the form of the ear-rings that Julia Portet wears.
Their shape suggests grace, strength, purity of line, and unbroken bonds. Those are the qualities that Dominique Portet wanted to embody in his own label.
